Safe Harbors of the Hudson Ann Street Gallery presents Materiality beginning Saturday, March 15, 2014. Featuring more than forty works by twenty-two fiber artists who employ traditional and non-tradition techniques, the exhibition provides an opportunity to experience fiber art that focuses on the creative potential of incorporating diverse materials and alternative technologies into the medium. Whether fiber structuring through the use of fabric, paper or human hair, these artists employ a wide range of techniques that include hand-woven and computer-assisted weaving, mixed-media collage, casting, combining sewing with painting and sculpture to express their ideas.

Materiality showcases a broad scope of works ranging from the conceptual to the functional that explore contemporary themes while addressing formal and aesthetic issues. Included are Andrea Donnelly’s hand-woven Weaver’s Bench, a tetraptych that investigates relationships between the physical body and mental space; Wylie Sofia Garcia’s sculpture Mothra, a work that examines political, spiritual and cultural challenges to the feminist ideology; and Laurie Trok’s stand-alone assemblage Repetition is a Form of Change, a 7-foot by 12-foot 3-dimensional installation in which line becomes sculpture and shadow becomes drawing. Through each artist’s unique process and visual voice, they break boundaries and continue to move the fiber arts forward–with possibilities extending well beyond the traditional archetypes.

The artists featured in the exhibition include: Joanne Arnett, Gail Baar, Erin E. Castellan, Andrea Donnelly, Wylie Garcia, Amy Gross, Karen Hampton, Tod Hensley, Marie-Laure Ilie, Anna Keck, C. Pazia Mannella, Ruben Marroquin, Leslie Pearson, Michael Robinson, Adelaide Shalhope, Jenine Shereos, Jodi Stevens,  Laurie Trok, Georgette L. Veeder, Jeanne Williamson, Shea Wilkinson and Doerte Weber.

The exhibition is curated by Virginia Walsh, Director of the Safe Harbors of the Hudson Ann Street Gallery.
